Joliet City Hall will be reopening to the public 6/1/2020

We will continue to provide services to the public and ask all applicants to limit in person contact with staff by using the Building Department drop box, located in the west vestibule of City Hall, continuing to utilize electronic submissions, and contacting the office to set up meetings in the field when needed. 

  Please review the changes to the website for updates of inspection, permit processes, and City Hall guidelines.

Permit Fee Payment Options

***When making payments, please reference the Application Reference Number near the top left of the invoice you receive. Click for example.

By Phone (Credit Card): 

            Phone number to all:  815-724-3830 (will talk to a person)

            Credit / debit card number

            Application reference number from invoice.

By Mail (Checks):

            Mail to:

                        Customer Service / Building Permit

                        150 W. Jefferson St.

                        Joliet, IL.  60432

Address checks to City of Joliet.

Include the application reference number form the invoice document (near top left) on the memo line of your check.  Click for example.

Include a copy of the invoice with payment. 

Blue Drop Payment Box (Checks):

            The blue drop box is on the west side of City Hall, 150 W Jefferson St., Joliet, IL 

Please follow the same directions as when mailing. Enclose payment in envelope, address envelope as if mailing. Include Customer Service/ Building Permit on first address line.  Place payment in an envelope and address it to Customer Service / Building Permit.  Include your application reference number from the invoice on the memo line of your check.

Current City of Joliet Adopted codes 

The Building & Inspectional Services Division, a part of the Community Development Department, is responsible for administering the building codes adopted by the City of Joliet. The City currently utilizes the following codes*:

  • Current Illinois State Plumbing Code With Local Amendments
  • International Building Code (2015)
  • International Residential Code (2015)
  • International Fire Prevention Code (2015)
  • International Mechanical Code (2015)
  • International Fuel Gas Code (2015)
  • International Energy Code (2018)
  • National Electric Code (2014 Edition)
  • Consolidated Storm Water Management, Soil Erosion And Sediment Control And Floodplain Management Regulations (2003)

*As of September 10, 2018, the City will be enforcing the IBC 2015 codes listed above.

If a contractor is performing the work, then the contractor must be the one to pull the permit (per Sec. 8-36 of the City of Joliet Code of Ordinances).
