Patrol is the main function of the Joliet Police Department. Patrol is divided up into four shifts, as to best serve the Joliet community. Patrol Officers are assigned to one of four 12-hour shifts that rotate on/off throughout the week; Dayshift A, Dayshift B, Nightshift A, or Nightshift B.

The East Patrol District includes officers assigned to respond to calls for service in Joliet east of the Des Plaines River to New Lenox. The east district includes the main Joliet Police station (150 W Washington St), the downtown area, and neighborhoods such as Neufairfield, Parkwood, Fairview, and Edgecreek.

The Central Patrol District includes officers assigned to respond to calls for service in Joliet west of the Des Plaines River to the 'Joliet Junction Trail' (W Jefferson St & Joyce Rd). The central district includes Amita St. Joseph Medical Center, and neighborhoods such as Reedwood, St. Pat’s, Cathedral, Cunningham, Emerald Lawns, and Marycrest.

The West Patrol District includes officers assigned to respond to calls for service in Joliet west of the 'Joliet Junction Trail' (W Jefferson St & Joyce Rd), and covers both Will & Kendall Counties.  The west district includes the Joliet Police west sub-station (7196 Caton Farm Rd), the business district, and neighborhoods such as Glenwood Manor, Old Kent, Twin Oaks, Timbers, Autumn Lakes, Warwick, Cambridge, Wexford, Picardy, Grand Prairie, Crystal Lawns, Heritage Lakes, Caton Crossing, County Glen, Wedgewood, Wesemere, Cumberland, Clublands, Greywall, and Lakewood Prairie.
