The Zoning Board of Appeals is responsible for hearing and deciding appeals to the interpretation of the zoning ordinances and requests for special exceptions to, or variations from, the regulations of the Zoning Ordinance. The board also holds a public hearing and makes a recommendation to the City Council on petitions for variations of use. The Director of Planning is Secretary to the Zoning Board of Appeals, and petitions may be filed at the Planning Division office.

The Zoning Board of Appeals consists of seven (7) citizen members appointed by the Mayor with the advice and consent of the City Council. The members serve without compensation and for a two (2) year term. Members shall serve until their successors are duly seated and qualified. At least one member of the Zoning Board of Appeals shall be a member of the Plan Commission. (CURRENTLY NONE) In order to serve on the Board of Appeals, a person must be a qualified elector of the City and have been an actual resident of the City of Joliet for at least one year immediately preceding the appointment.
