Political-Yard-Sign

As election season gets underway, the City of Joliet reminds residents to keep political signs on private property and out of public rights-of-way.

Do not place signs in parkways (the grassy areas between the street and sidewalk) or in street medians. Signs placed in these public areas will be removed.

When placing a political sign on private property, please follow these guidelines:

  • Keep signs back from the street. Place them at least 10 feet from the edge of the pavement.
  • Leave space beside sidewalks. Where sidewalks are present, place signs at least two feet beyond the sidewalk’s edge on the private property side.
  • Follow size limits. Signs, including their support structures, may not exceed 16 square feet in area or five feet in height.
  • Do not attach signs to trees or utility poles.

There is no limit on how long political signs may be displayed on residential property, but placement and size requirements still apply.

To report a sign in a prohibited location, please use the City’s CitizenVUE Portal. For questions, please call the City of Joliet at 815-724-4000.
