The Morton Arboretum's Chicago Region Trees Initiative (CRTI) will host a volunteer planting event and free native tree and shrub giveaway on Friday, October 30, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Joliet Junior College, 1215 Houbolt Road. Activities will take place at the northwest corner of the Building L parking lot.

Community members are invited to help plant 20 native trees and shrubs to increase tree canopy and support biodiversity on campus. No experience is necessary, and all ages are welcome.

The giveaway will begin at 10 a.m., with a variety of native trees and shrubs available at no cost on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last. The City of Joliet Tree Advisory Board will assist with distribution, and CRTI staff will be available to help participants select an appropriate species and provide planting guidance.

Trees and shrubs are approximately 2.5 to 4 feet tall and are intended for permanent, in-ground planting. They are not suitable for containers.

Attendees should bring a vehicle with enough space to transport their tree or shrub. Most will fit in a sedan, SUV, or truck. Because staff and equipment will be limited, attendees are encouraged to bring a dolly or another person to assist with loading and transport.
