Phased closures of Water Street began Monday, October 12, 2026, as part of the Illinois Department of Transportation’s I-80 reconstruction project. The closures will allow crews to relocate electrical, water, and sanitary sewer utilities ahead of construction of the future I-80 bridges over the Des Plaines River.
The work will involve two closure phases:
Phase 1: Water Street will be closed to all traffic between I-80 and Lucas Street. Motorists should follow the posted detour using Edward Street, River Street, and connecting streets.
Phase 2: Water Street will be closed to all traffic between Lucas Street and Shelby Street. Traffic will be detoured via South Des Plaines Street and Lucas Street.
Each phase is expected to last approximately three to four weeks and will occur twice. ComEd will complete utility relocation first, followed by water and sanitary sewer relocation. The full sequence of work is expected to take approximately 12 to 16 weeks.
Motorists should follow posted detour signs and allow extra time when traveling through the area.
